The Keizer Community Diversity & Equity Committee on Aug. 7 reviewed a suite of short- and long-term community-outreach goals, discussed potential locations and event formats, and voted to forward outreach postcards to the Keizer City Council for approval.
Nut graf: Committee members prioritized improving participation from underrepresented groups by identifying partner organizations, testing locations for accessibility and visibility, and producing concise outreach materials including bilingual postcards with QR codes linking to city resources and the planned survey.
Discussion: Members reported outreach steps already under way. One member said she is building relationships with the DSP and special-needs community and has a tentative schedule for engagement; another reported recent contact with the NAACP and described an upcoming expungement clinic on Aug. 15 and tabling at the Urban Arts Festival on Sept. 21 and Farmers’ Market on Sept. 13. Committee members suggested potential venues including the rec center, Southeast Community Center, event center, coffee shops, churches, and the renovated Bob Newton Park; accessibility and comfort for new attendees was emphasized.
Several members proposed an outdoor community barbecue or tabling during the summer concert series as a way to meet residents informally; others urged keeping early outreach simple (a table or one-hour presence) and to pilot one location before scaling.
The committee reviewed a postcard design (production led by Barbara Barney and a production manager) meant to be a one-page, visual call to action linking to volunteer information and the city survey. Members noted the draft needs an accurate Spanish translation and functioning QR codes; the committee directed staff to finalize the card and voted to forward the postcards (including the volunteer information and Spanish version) to city council for approval.
Votes at a glance: Approval of July 2025 minutes — motion moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Motion to send speaker-selection and presentation guidelines (proclamation guidance) to city council — moved, seconded and approved by voice vote. Motion to send outreach/postcard materials (with Spanish version and added committees) to city council — moved, seconded and approved by voice vote.
Ending: Staff said the vendor selection for a citywide national survey remains in progress and that the city expects to finalize a vendor and contract in the coming weeks; once that happens the committee will have a chance to add roughly 15–20 questions. The committee set a target to host a community-focused meeting by January (planning) and by July 2026 to hold a public community meeting with partners to collect feedback and reduce barriers to participation.
