The Fayetteville City Council voted to seek lower speed limits on two residential corridors after members said residents reported frequent speeding.
Councilmember Harris moved to make the entire Seabrook Road corridor between the Langdon intersection and Jasper a 25-mph zone; the motion was seconded and council approved the request for action to be placed on the upcoming consent/agenda. Councilmember Davis made a similar request for a 25-mph limit on West Rowan Street, citing observed speeds and pedestrian concerns; council approved that item as well.
Why it matters: Lowering posted speeds on residential streets is intended to improve safety for pedestrians, school users and neighborhood traffic. Council asked staff to bring the traffic-change items to the next council meeting and to include required signage.
Details and next steps: Staff indicated placement of signage and the statutory or administrative process for speed-limit changes would be handled through Transportation and the city clerk; council requested the items be placed on the Aug. 11 agenda if possible.
Ending: Council approved both requests and asked staff to schedule the changes and provide the required signage and public notice.
