Beaver County sets Oct. 4 Household Hazardous Waste event; clarifies private ownership of roadside paper bins and recommends Bruner Disposal contract option

Beaver County staff told commissioners the county will hold a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) event on Oct. 4 and that registration will be made available on www.prc.org, likely in late August or early September.

A recycling-center representative said the county receives many calls asking why the green-and-yellow mixed-paper roadside bins across the county are overflowing. The staff member told the board those bins are owned by a private hauler based in Glassport, Pa., and are not the county’s responsibility. The speaker said the county has sometimes mitigated overflow at its facilities but that the private hauler’s reliability varies and some municipal locations have removed bins for that reason.

The recycling staff also told commissioners that the county’s annual HHW event fills its slots quickly and encouraged residents to check PRC’s website for registration when it opens. The staff described the event as a roughly four-hour operation and said the county tries to serve as many residents as possible within that window.

In addition to recycling operations, a county staffer recommended moving forward with the county’s garbage contract renewal in October by opting into an optional year 1 with Bruner Disposal for county facilities. The staff member said they would prepare a resolution request to present to the board; no formal vote on the resolution was recorded at the meeting. "My recommendation to move forward ... is to opt into optional year 1 with Bruner Disposal for our garbage contract for all the county facilities. So I will, as with your blessing, prepare a resolution request to do so," the staff member said.

No formal contract award or resolution vote was recorded in the meeting transcript; staff signaled they will prepare paperwork for a future meeting.
