Kings County Behavioral Health staff announced Tuesday that the agency will host a series of community focus groups next week and in mid‑September to gather public input for the county’s Behavioral Health Services Act (Prop. 1) integrated plan.
Brenda Tamayo Pagan, program manager with Kings County Behavioral Health, told the Board of Supervisors the outreach will begin next week with sessions in Hanford, Corcoran and Avenal focused on people experiencing homelessness, veterans, people with lived experience of mental health or substance use conditions, and LGBTQ+ community members. Additional sessions the week of Sept. 15 will focus on older adults, family supports and people with lived experience of substance use disorder, she said. Spanish interpretation will be available.
Tamayo Pagan said final dates and times will be posted on Kings County Behavioral Health’s website and social media; people seeking specific dates were given an email contact: bhsa@co.kings.ca.us.
Why it matters: Proposition 1, approved by county voters in March 2024, expanded local behavioral health and supportive housing services for people with serious mental illness, people who use substances and those experiencing homelessness. County staff said community input will be used to shape the integrated plan required to allocate Prop. 1 funds locally.
