Commissioners seek review of ADA advisory board and county compliance responsibilities

Commissioner discussion followed a request in which the EMA director had declined to serve on the ADA advisory board. Commissioners said they lack clarity about accountability for ADA compliance and suggested inviting stakeholders to explain concerns. County Attorney Jacob Ehler offered to research how other Indiana counties structure ADA oversight and said he could identify consulting firms that perform audits and transition plans.
County staff reported a comprehensive ADA transition plan is already compiled and posted to the county website; staff suggested updating or getting fresh eyes on the document. Commissioners discussed potentially appointing an ADA compliance officer to be the county’s point of contact and recommended work with an outside consulting firm to inventory accessibility needs and remedies. The board agreed to have the county attorney research legal and organizational options and return with recommendations within a week.
