Germantown schools honor teachers after multiple top-3 state assessment finishes

The Germantown Municipal School District recognized teachers across grade levels and subjects after student performance placed multiple grade teams among the top three in Tennessee state assessments.

Superintendent Manuel opened the recognition portion of the meeting by thanking teachers, instructional coaches and specialist staff for their work that contributed to the results. The district noted that GMSD placed in the top 10 and 24 out of the 27 state-assessed districts, and several grade-level teams earned top-three placements in English/language arts, math and science.

High school supervisors and instructional leaders called grade-level teams forward to receive plaques. Bill Gillespie, a high school supervisor, honored ninth- and tenth-grade English PLCs for consistent high performance; the transcript notes the teams' work showed up in AP and dual-enrollment results and strong ACT composite scores.

Jenny Ledford, K-8 math and science supervisor, described a multi-year math initiative that aimed to get at least 70% of students to math proficiency by seventh grade. Ledford said the district started from roughly 54% proficiency three years earlier (and 39.5% the prior year) and credited cross-grade collaboration, coherent curriculum, and intensive PLC work for the gains. Ledford outlined that the district's strategy emphasized building a seamless K-12 progression and deeper conceptual understanding rather than only procedural knowledge.

Math and science supervisors announced grade-level placements: for math, multiple elementary and middle grades were in the top three statewide (including seventh grade ranked first this year); for science, third, fourth and fifth grades earned top placements with fifth grade first in the state. The district highlighted that kindergarten through second-grade teachers provided foundational instruction essential to later gains.

The board and superintendent praised teachers' dedication and the collaborative structures (PLC coaches, instructional coaches, testing coordinators and technology staff) that supported statewide testing and curriculum implementation. Karen Sanders, the district testing coordinator, and several other staff members (instructional coaches, ELA/Math supervisors, blended learning supervisor and technology staff) were mentioned as part of the support team.

The recognition segment concluded with administrators and teachers receiving plaques and photographs; the superintendent noted the district would continue to focus on the strategic plan and next steps to sustain gains.
