During its Aug. 19 meeting the Sumner County School Board postponed action on policy 5.307, described on the agenda as relating to fiscal/assault (policy title in the packet). The item was on second reading.
Board members questioned a provision that appeared to disqualify hourly employees from continued‑pay benefits if employed for less than a full pay period. A board member asked whether the provision represented a probationary requirement. Staff and colleagues pointed to a footnote at the bottom of the policy referencing Tennessee code, and members asked the district attorney to analyze the statutory language.
Miss Bartlett and other board members said they were concerned that the policy, as drafted, could exclude employees who suffer a physical assault on the job very soon after starting. Several members indicated they would prefer to send the policy back for legal review and clarification rather than vote on it in its current form.
The board moved and seconded a motion to table the item; the motion carried by voice vote.
Ending: The board will return to the policy after district counsel reviews the Tennessee code citation and provides guidance on whether the draft language complies with state law.
