Commissioners preview sale of sheriff27s K-9 to city for $15,000; payment plan proposed

Deputy Chief Hutchins attended to answer questions. Commissioners asked about replacement and training costs for a successor dog; Hutchins said a replacement dog costs about $9,500 and training costs are currently covered under a local agreement with a partner organization, meaning the county would not incur immediate extra training expenses beyond salary and equipment.
Staff described the city27s proposed payment schedule: $7,500 in the current fiscal year and $7,500 the following year. Hutchins said the city27s attorney is reviewing how the city will budget the payment and that a memorandum of understanding will be required. Commissioners did not take a vote during the workshop; staff said the item will be placed on the Sept. 2 commission meeting agenda for formal consideration.
No formal motion or vote was recorded at the workshop. The proposal as described includes a two-year payment plan and an MOU; staff said the county would not expect to lose money on the transfer based on the current information provided to the workshop.
Questions remained about contract language and whether the full $15,000 would be paid if the dog is later incapacitated; Hutchins said the city27s proposed arrangement would still reflect the $15,000 commitment regardless of subsequent events.
The workshop record indicates the county will bring the item forward to the Sept. 2 agenda for a formal vote and for commissioners to consider the sale and any required documentation.
