Hubbardston senior center schedules barbecue, outreach and trips; will invite funders and Elder Affairs representative

The Town of Hubbardston senior center discussed several upcoming events and outreach efforts at its July 2, 2025 meeting, including a cookout planned for Sept. 17, invitations to local funders, and a multi-day bus trip with contingency plans for bad weather.
Chairperson Flo and director Claudia described plans for a barbecue intended for Sept. 17, 2025, with a menu of hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, baked beans and desserts brought by participants. Claudia said she had invited local officials Peter Durant and Tyler Berthia and planned to invite Adam Frank from Elder Affairs in Boston so he could see how formula and other grant funds are used at the center. Members discussed logistics including sign-up sheets, potential bus arrangements, and whether to solicit voluntary donations at the event; the group agreed attendees could bring desserts and that organizers would prepare main dishes.
The board reviewed calendar conflicts and other community events. Members noted a North Brookfield sportsmen’s center event and a town field day; they tentatively set a multi-day fall yard/market event for Sept. 19–20 or Oct. 19–20 depending on availability and other town activities. The group discussed limiting electronics and heavy furniture at the sale and agreed to prohibit large electronics and bulky furniture that volunteers cannot lift.
On longer-distance trips, staff reported a holiday trip with tentative late-October dates; the bus company said it would reschedule if bad weather prevented travel. The board said trip participants must sign up online for travel insurance as required by the vendor.
Members also discussed outreach to local banks for donations. Claudia and Sue said Athol Savings Bank and Apple Savings Bank have been receptive to donations rather than formal grants; Claudia said she would follow up on donation requests for the art program. The group planned to continue outreach at local events to distribute caregiver information and a “file of life” form used for medical information.
