Elections office reports lower statewide and county registration-repair totals; staff member resigns

Registration repair numbers
Staff said the statewide number of flagged registrations has fallen from about 103,000 at the program’s start to 82,740 as of the meeting; Buncombe County’s count dropped from about 2,089 to 1,403. Staff member Amy described the decrease as roughly 20 percent statewide and nearly 40 percent locally and said the remaining flagged records are being updated in the system where possible.
Staff said the State Board is mailing notices to flagged voters and that the return envelopes will be addressed to county elections offices so responses will arrive locally. Staff also said they have vetted a new process for correcting records in the voter file without interrupting the regular list-maintenance schedule.
Staffing update
The office announced the resignation of elections staffer Justin Tate effective Aug. 15. Staff said Human Resources will lead recruitment, the position will be posted publicly, and the office will temporarily use internal and seasonal staff to cover absentee operations until a permanent hire is made.

Staff asked the Board to note the state mailings and said they will report back on responses and progress repairing flagged registrations. The county will post the vacancy and use HR screening for hiring the replacement ahead of the primary cycle.
