Following a closed session on legal matters, the Santa Rosa City Council reported out on Aug. 26 that, by a 6‑vote majority with Vice Mayor Alvarez absent, the council directed the city attorney to initiate litigation on behalf of the city.
The city attorney read the brief, reportable action during the open meeting: “By a vote of 6 affirmative votes with Vice Mayor Alvarez absent, council directed the city attorney to initiate litigation on behalf of the city. Once formally commenced, the particulars of the action will be made available to any person requesting that information.” The city attorney said there were no other reportable actions to announce.
The council did not provide further details in open session about the subject matter of the litigation. Under California law, some closed‑session matters remain confidential until the city chooses to provide details or the action becomes public through filing.
The city clerk will release the formal closed‑session report required under state law when appropriate and the city attorney indicated the particulars will be made available to those requesting them after the action is formally commenced.
