Planning commission recommends repeal of Port McKenzie development permit requirement

The Matanuska-Susitna Borough Planning Commission on Aug. 18 adopted Resolution 25‑14 recommending an ordinance to amend MSB 17.23 (Port McKenzie Special Use District) to repeal the provision requiring a separate Port District development permit.
Alex Straub, planning director for the borough, told commissioners the Port McKenzie district is largely borough-owned and that most development there already requires a borough lease and assembly approval. Straub described the Port District development permit as “redundant as far as regulations go” and said removing it would reduce unnecessary permitting steps for developments on borough land.
The commission opened the public hearing for the Port McKenzie item and received no public comment. With no objections noted by commissioners, the body adopted Resolution 25‑14 by voice vote.
The resolution will be forwarded to the borough assembly for consideration. Straub and commissioners did not provide a timeline for assembly action during the meeting.
