The Churchill County Planning Commission unanimously approved Aug. 13 a special use permit (SUP25‑27) for Northern Nevada Research Company (NNRC) to expand its combustion and battery‑testing facility at 7162 California Street.
Dean Patterson, Public Works and Planning, said NNRC operates stress tests on vehicle batteries and other testing operations; NNRC previously obtained other special use permits and had met prior conditions. The current application proposes a 30‑by‑40 foot building to support non‑stress test setup activities and protect work from weather. "No major issues were identified," Patterson told the commission, while noting minor issues including updating the facility emergency response plan to the satisfaction of the fire marshal and maintaining required state permits.
Joshua Bush, an NNRC representative, told the commission the new building will be used for setting up tests that will not be conducted inside that structure, mainly to keep equipment out of the elements. The planning commission voted to approve the permit subject to the conditions listed in the staff report; Patterson reminded the applicant of a 10‑day appeal period before final processing.
The approval allows NNRC to add indoor workspace at its existing industrial site; staff will monitor compliance with emergency‑response and state permitting requirements.
