Board members scrutinized cafeteria proposals and the cafeteria director’s report, asking for clearer forecasting of fund balances as a multi‑week kitchen renovation continues.
Missus Phillips, the cafeteria director, said the district is undertaking a kitchen equipment project with demolition underway and an installation deadline of Aug. 8. She said the cafeteria fund balance remains “quite large,” with reimbursements and summer timing affecting cash flow; she estimated (without a bank statement on hand) a prior balance in the ballpark of around $1.1–1.2 million but said she would confirm exact figures.
Directors questioned why the district was proposing price increases while the fund balance remained high. Phillips said most item prices reflected historic pricing and that she raises prices only when margins become too small. The board discussed taking some revenue pressure off students: members asked to leave a proposed garlic‑knot price increase unchanged (keep at 50¢) and to set adult lunch and breakfast prices to the state required minimums ($4.85 for adult lunch and $2.94 for adult breakfast). The board agreed to update the Tuesday agenda to reflect those changes.
Phillips also said major kitchen equipment installation will occur in the next two weeks, with completion expected by the Aug. 8 deadline; some demolition work has already occurred and air handling of work is being staged. She noted that funds from the cafeteria will pay part of the project and that district funds will cover the remainder.
Board members asked Phillips to prepare a 12‑month forecast showing the effect of the proposed price changes and the renovation on the fund balance to guide future decisions.
