District pauses summer school classes, hires contractor after mold discovered in elementary classrooms

Administrators reported that on July 8 custodial staff found mold in several third‑grade classrooms after power outages had temporarily taken air handlers offline. District maintenance sealed rooms, cleaned and fogged affected spaces, and hired Firewater Response to collect air and physical samples and provide testing.
Further mold was found July 17 in two second‑grade classrooms while summer school was in session. Administrators moved students out of the affected hallway, paused summer school in that area, notified families and contracted additional cleanup. The contractor’s initial assessment found elevated humidity; maintenance adjusted HVAC settings and added large fans and air scrubbers.
District staff said most rooms returned acceptable readings after remediation; one room received additional cleaning. Continued cleaning and air scrubbing were scheduled through the weekend, with retesting planned Monday and a further retest about 10 days before the start of school to confirm clearance prior to reopening and summer feeding.
Administrators said no students were in the rooms of concern when mold was first found and that communication with families and continued monitoring are priorities.
