Council approves Archway location but tables plaque and final design approvals

The council approved the proposed location for a downtown archway at Fifth and Story Street but voted to table final design approval, including donor plaques and electrical specifications, until additional information and contractor documents are available.

City planning staff and project supporters had recommended the Fifth and Story location after public notification and discussion with property owners; planning and zoning recommended the location to the council. During the meeting council members praised the site as a downtown gateway, but several members expressed concerns about donor plaques that were not part of earlier plans and about missing electrical drawings and insurance certificates.

Council members said plaques were not included in the original scope and worried plaques attached to the structure could detract from the sculpture; several suggested a freestanding donor plaque instead. Members also asked for electrical load notes, conduit routing, lighting placement and insurance or certificate of liability information before final approval. One member moved to table design and agreement approvals until these items and remaining bids are submitted; the council approved the motion on a roll call.
