Local lawmakers and deputies describe response to Evergreen High School shooting and offer community support

Multiple speakers at the Conifer Area Council meeting addressed last week’s shooting at Evergreen High School, offered condolences and described the law-enforcement response.

Tammy Story, state representative for House District 25, said the shooting on Sept. 10 was "a very traumatic and unnerving situation" for Evergreen High School and the surrounding communities. Story said she has been meeting with community members and groups to assist with recovery and invited residents to reach out to her for conversation and support.

Kurt Kiser, vice president of the Conifer Area Council speaking on behalf of Senator Mark Bazely and Sheriff’s Office representatives who could not attend, summarized materials the sheriff wanted the community to know. He directed residents to the sheriff epartment nd county websites for resources including Lookout Alert (the county—mergency notification system) and quarterly law-enforcement reports that include prevention work, staffing and wildland-fire management. Kiser read a statement praising deputies and first responders: "The response of our deputies and staff was incredible...I witnessed an incredible display of courage, compassion, and selfless commitment at its highest level. The school staff and students did what they were trained to do. Their actions saved lives."

Kiser also highlighted the Sheriff epartment’s Blue Envelope Program, a new initiative to promote safer interactions between first responders and people who have conditions or disabilities that may affect communication; he said the program fosters trust and that items are available through local law-enforcement and fire agencies.

Speakers emphasized ongoing investigative work and support for victims, families and the community as officials continue recovery efforts.
