Resident urges district to strengthen reading services for students with disabilities

A resident told the Haverford Township School District board on Aug. 21 that the district should strengthen reading instruction for students with reading disabilities and those in autistic-support programs.
Rich Magloria, who identified himself as a Haverford Township resident, told the board he read a recent article about districts and families engaging in legal disputes over appropriate reading instruction for disabled students. He urged the district to ensure reading specialists work with autistic-support teachers and to consider evidence-based training such as Wilson methodology when it is appropriate. Magloria said he favors resolving disputes through collegial discussions and mediation rather than court proceedings and offered to help provide mediation services in the future.
Magloria asked the board to review its reading services for students with disabilities and said he would raise the subject again at the next work session. The remarks were offered during the meeting’s public-comment period for topics not on the agenda and did not result in any board action that evening.
