Councilmember Johnson to convene citywide meetings on fiber deployment

Councilmember Johnson told the Transportation, Energy and Utilities Committee on Aug. 19 that he will convene noticed city meetings with fiber providers to address broadband deployment across Jacksonville and explore a path toward wider access.
“Coming up in the next few weeks, I'll be convening, noticed meetings about fiber,” Johnson said, adding that he plans to invite council colleagues and companies that provide fiber services. He noted residents frequently ask, “When are we getting fiber?” and said he hopes the meetings will produce a report that the council could adopt as a resolution to promote citywide access.
Johnson said the meetings would include stakeholders from across the city and that he would share details with the TEU committee. Committee members expressed support for the idea and said such meetings could clarify responsibilities between providers, homeowners associations and city oversight where disputes arise during installation.
No formal committee action was taken on the announcement; the item was presented as a notice of upcoming convenings and a potential future report.
