Bexar County Commissioners Court approved a preauthorization on Aug. 19 to award multiple delivery purchase orders totaling $4,299,360.74 for 78 law‑enforcement vehicles. The preauthorization allows vendors to place orders with manufacturers earlier so vehicles for the sheriff, constables and county departments can be manufactured and delivered sooner.
Public Works and Fleet staff explained the county shifted its approach: instead of purchasing fully up‑fitted vehicles from dealers, the county will buy base/model vehicles and complete the upfitting locally, which staff estimated could save about six months. Fleet management also said ordering earlier in the fiscal cycle reduces competition delays that occur when many agencies place orders after budgets are adopted.
The aggregate award covers multiple named dealers (Caldwell County Chevrolet, Lake Country Chevrolet, Sainz Laredo Chevrolet, Caldwell Country Ford/DBA Rockdale Country Ford, Same’s Bastrop, Silsbee) and the purchase will be executed after contract/award documentation is filed. Sheriff’s office representatives supported the action, noting many current vehicles are aged with high mileage; county staff and the sheriff said earlier ordering would improve fleet readiness and officer safety.
Commissioner Clay Flores moved approval; the motion was seconded and the court approved the preauthorization.
