Polk County awards $7,500 to Union Lake–Sarah Improvement District for invasive-plant work

Polk County commissioners approved a $7,500 special project award to the Union Lake–Sarah Improvement District to support invasive aquatic-plant removal and related maintenance.
The county’s AIS (aquatic invasive species) task force recommended the award after the district demonstrated a combination of mechanical removal (an eco-harvester) and targeted treatments for Eurasian watermilfoil and curly-leaf pondweed. The presenter said the district has begun a special assessment to make treatments self-sustaining and that the district uses a local gravel pit approved by the Minnesota DNR as a drop-off for mechanically removed plant material.
Commissioners moved and seconded the award on the AIS task force recommendation; the motion carried on a voice vote. Transcript participants discussed the mapping and delineation done for the lake and noted some areas of improvement in the campground bay and continuing concerns in East Campground Bay and a shallow narrows area.
The task force and district asked that funds be used for removal labor and maintenance; the presenter said the district might also use the money for surveying if needed. The board’s vote was recorded as “aye” and the motion carried.
