Montebello Parks and Recreation opens fall registration, details summer wrap-up and upcoming special events

Montebello — At a Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, Assistant Director Veronica Ramirez summarized current and upcoming recreation programs and special events, announced registration deadlines and fees, and described vendor and participation processes for seasonal activities.

Ramirez told commissioners that youth basketball has concluded for the summer and registration is open for the fall youth flag football program through Sept. 16. “We are accepting, as I mentioned, registration for a number of those divisions. We are charging $60 per participant, which includes a jersey and an end of season award,” Ramirez said. Ramirez said there is also a tiny‑tots offering for 3‑year‑olds with a small number of spaces remaining and that the D division (5–6 year olds) is full.

The play school program will run from September through May and charges $275 per participant per month. Ramirez said participants must be 3 years old by Sept. 2 and potty trained; the program runs Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the youth center. Ramirez said the tiny‑tots group for 3‑ and 4‑year‑olds is full but there are a few spaces in the 4–5 age group.

Adult sports are wrapping up their current seasons; Ramirez said the department recently added a Tuesday night adult softball league at Citi Field for players seeking more competitive play. Team registration is $320 and teams may list up to 15 players.

On recreational trips, Ramirez said the department has two outings coming the weekend after the meeting: a Saturday, Aug. 23 trip to Santa Monica Beach for 25 participants with four staff supervisors and a coordinator attending, and two Catalina Island trips on successive Sundays, each able to carry up to 50 guests per trip. When a commissioner asked whether trips run year‑round, Ramirez replied, “Yes. It’s year round. Laurie, correct me if I’m wrong,” and explained the program takes a break in July and otherwise runs monthly.

Ramirez described special events planned for the fall and early winter. The commission was invited to an annual ceremony at City Hall on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m.; Ramirez said the program will last about 45 minutes and include remarks from the city council and public safety chiefs. A reintroduced car show will take place at the municipal golf course near the Bicknell monument; Ramirez said the event allows up to 100 cars and 15–20 show bikes, that 30 cars and one bicycle were registered at the time of the report, and that vendor registration is open for car‑themed vendors and a limited number of nonprofits. Ramirez said food vendors should contact the Parks and Recreation office or recreation supervisor Nadine Hernandez and complete the online questionnaire and insurance requirements listed on the city’s special events page: “They’re always welcome to contact us directly at the office, and they can actually just call and ask for, like myself or our recreation supervisor, Nadine Hernandez,” she said.

Ramirez also previewed the Heritage Festival and Parade and associated 5K/10K run scheduled for Oct. 10–12 and the Halloween festival planned for Oct. 25. She said full event lineups and band confirmations will be provided at the next commission meeting.
