Jamestown Community Fiber project: English area 40% complete; network capable of 2 Gbps, staff say

Jamestown utility staff and a private partner presented an update Monday on the Jamestown Community Fiber project, saying field work is underway and that the system will support multi-gigabit service.
Chris Hellstrom, deputy general manager of electric, said the project is being deployed in distribution areas and that the English area is “about 40% complete.” He said electronics for the English substation were expected this week. “Once you have the fiber run, you have all the mainline fiber, you need to splice it… English is about 40% complete, and we're expecting the electronics for that substation this week,” Hellstrom said.
City staff described the network as a split, distributed architecture and said it is capable of delivering up to 2 gigabits per second. A business development coordinator from the partner company said the grant arrangement will reimburse connection costs for an initial period — staff said the next 15 months of connections are reimbursable under the grant — and encouraged residents to sign up early so more fixed costs can be recovered across subscribers.
Staff said they would provide a phone number and website with sign-up instructions in the coming days.
