Monterey County proclaims Aug. 19 as Clara Adams Day after junior national track titles

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 19 adopted a resolution honoring North Salinas High School student-athlete Clara Adams for winning two AAU junior national championships and breaking local and regional records, and proclaimed every Aug. 19 as Clara Adams Day in Monterey County.
The resolution, introduced by Supervisor Alejo and seconded by Supervisor Askew, was approved unanimously. "This morning, it is the honor of the County of Monterey Board of Supervisors to honor...one of our rising stars," Supervisor Alejo said before calling Adams and her father to the dais.
The board’s presentation cited Adams’s wins at the 2025 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Houston — a 400-meter time of 52.58 seconds and a 200-meter time of 23.42 seconds — and noted she is ranked among the top high school sprinters nationally. The resolution also recognized her 3.88 grade-point average and several school, county and regional records she set this season.
Clara Adams addressed the board and thanked the community. "I just really appreciate everybody who's had my back, especially, after all the controversy that happened after state," she said. Her father and coach, David Adams, told supervisors the recognition was especially meaningful given the difficulties the family had faced publicly this year. "When you're going through a hard time... I felt that me and Clara was alone," he said, adding thanks for the board’s support.
The board invited representatives from federal and state offices to present recognition plaques and certificates; a certificate of congressional recognition from U.S. Rep. Zoe Lofgren and recognitions from Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas’s and State Sen. John Laird’s offices were presented by their staff. Dominic Dursa, district director for the assembly speaker, and Marissa Hernandez, field representative for State Sen. Laird, spoke briefly in support.
The resolution notes the county will prepare a letter supporting the reinstatement of a state title that the family said had been disputed; Supervisor Alejo said the board planned to sign and send such a letter. The ceremonial item required no follow-up action beyond the resolution adoption.
Clara Adams, 16, and her father left the dais with the board resolution, recognition certificates and a county photo for social media. The board recessed to other business after the presentation.
