The Taylor County School Board postponed action on one personnel supplemental and approved the remaining supplemental appointments at its meeting. Board members pulled item 12.01, subsection 6, for separate discussion and moved to defer that single personnel recommendation to a later meeting while approving the rest of the supplementals on tonight’s agenda.
The move to postpone was made and seconded; the motion to postpone passed without recorded dissent. Board members then voted to approve the remaining supplemental appointments that had been presented and vetted by the supplemental committee.
The board’s discussion focused on athletics supplements and how positions were advertised and paid. Board members said the district had advertised four assistant high-school football positions but because of roster size a fifth supplemental was needed. Members raised concerns that some supplements were advertised as half supplements (50 percent) while others were full supplements, and that the paperwork and agenda did not consistently show which positions were split.
“ If it turns out any different, it would have to come back to us for action,” said Brenda, a board member, addressing how changes from half to full supplements would be handled.
District staff and board members described current practice: the supplemental committee reviews and authorizes supplementals; the athletic director (Mr. Craswell) makes assignments on splits versus full supplements; and the district advertises positions indicating whether they are half supplements when that is the case. Kiki, a district staff member, said the district maintains an Excel spreadsheet that will be updated with names as positions are filled so the board can see which spots remain vacant.
Board members asked that candidates hired before formal board approval be told explicitly that employment is conditional pending board action and that they should work only regular contract hours until the board acts. Several board members said past practice of hiring pending board approval has generally worked without issue, but they emphasized the need for clear communication to new hires about conditional status and limits on extra hours.
Board members also discussed an advertised athletic director position that was pulled from the agenda and will return to the supplemental committee for further consideration. The board instructed staff to bring clearer supplemental spreadsheets to the next meeting so members can see which positions are filled, which are vacant, and which supplements are split.
The board set the postponed personnel item to be considered at a subsequent August meeting.
