District to expand construction apprenticeship program; board highlights AP and dual-credit successes

District administrators told the board Aug. 4 that the career and technical-education program will expand to include an apprenticeship pathway in construction. Staff said the new offering will let students start apprenticeship work toward a journeyman track and earn dual credit through Vincennes; the program will cover foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing and HVAC and run as a half-day program beginning this fall.
Administrators also highlighted academic results: the district reported 148 certified-staff evaluations from the prior year and multiple students earning AP exam scores and dual credits. District staff said a cohort of students took AP exams across 14 courses and that many students earned passing scores; staff also noted the district’s partnership with the Indiana College Corps and Indiana University at Kokomo to provide dual-credit opportunities. Staff said one school had a third-grade pass rate they expect to report publicly once the state board of education finalizes scores.
Board members praised the combination of career-technical pathways and college-credit access as options that meet different students’ needs. No formal board action was recorded on the apprenticeship expansion during the meeting; staff said details about scheduling and space use are being finalized.
