County approves two full-time landfill positions amid turnover and operational demands

The department requested an entry-level equipment operator (in place of a previously budgeted equipment-operator position that staff had not refilled) and a lot attendant to replace a recent vacancy. Both positions were included in the adopted budget for the fiscal year and are funded through the landfill enterprise fund.
Staff described the lot-attendant role as a multi-purpose position that assists the public, performs litter pickup, supports traffic control when transfer trucks arrive, and fills in for operators as they cross-train. Managers stressed that lot attendants increase site safety by providing an additional set of eyes for equipment operators and by directing public traffic away from operating machinery. Commissioners noted the landfill experiences regular turnover and that staffing changes could be a factor when the county reviews future contracts and tipping fees.
A motion to approve hiring both positions passed on a voice vote.
