Spring City Council, sitting as canvassers, certifies primary-election results

The Spring City Council, meeting as the city’s board of canvassers on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at Spring City Hall, unanimously approved a resolution that accepted the primary-election results provided by the county clerk.
The action formalized vote totals on the city’s primary ballot and recorded that 16 ballots from Spring City were not counted — two for mismatched signatures, one unsigned and 13 that the county received after the election-day deadline.
The council’s decision followed presentation of the county’s final tally. The county’s figures listed the top results on the primary ballot as: Laurel Wertman, 203 votes; Michael Broadbent, 139 votes; Randy Strait, 136 votes; Joseph McGriff, 119 votes; Margaret Parnell Grinstead, 104 votes; and John Stewart, 51 votes. The chair said the final numbers differed slightly from those the newspaper had reported earlier.
The chair urged voters to note the county’s deadline policy, saying, “the new voting rule is pretty strict. They have to receive the ballot ... before the voting ends on election day.” That procedural note followed the county’s explanation that 13 ballots were excluded because they arrived after the deadline.
Marty McCain moved to accept the county-provided resolution and Paul Penrod seconded the motion. The roll call vote recorded Randy Strait, Marty McCain, Ken Croke, Courtney Chen and Paul Penrod as voting yes; the motion passed unanimously.
The council signed the canvass document as required by the county and adjourned the canvass session before moving to other business.
