Hernando County School District staff presented a draft mutual‑aid agreement with Hernando County for emergency shelter operations at the July 29 workshop and asked the school board to grant tentative approval to forward the document to the county commission.
Assistant Superintendent Barbara Kidder, fire official Bill Hall and staff counsel Caroline Moakler said the draft memorandum of understanding lays out roles and responsibilities for using district facilities as emergency shelters, and that county approval is required to finalize the agreement. Staff said the draft is intended to be reciprocal and to clarify operational responsibilities during disasters.
Board members asked few questions. Staff said the document will be signed by the school board chair and the superintendent before being submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for formal approval. Officials emphasized the need to complete the agreement before the peak of hurricane season.
No formal vote was recorded at the workshop; staff described the presentation as a tentative review and said the finalized agreement would be brought forward after county review. The district will continue to coordinate with county emergency management officials to finalize roles and operational details.
