Transportation commission agrees to schedule chair selection for October meeting

After discussing timing and the chair’s availability, Glendale’s Transportation and Parking Commission agreed July 28 to schedule the selection of the next chairperson at the commission’s regular October meeting.

City staff counsel, Aaron Israel, explained that the commission’s procedural rules call for the annual chair selection to occur at the August meeting and that changing that schedule requires a vote to waive or amend the procedural rule. Chair Evagian said she will be out of the country in late August and asked that the commission move the selection so she could attend and ceremonially pass the gavel.

Commission discussion explored alternatives: holding a special meeting in September, keeping the August date and selecting a chair pro tem for any August meeting, or moving selection to the regular October meeting. Staff noted an ordinance fixes the chair’s one‑year term by date, so shifting selection to a different month would require an amendment to the procedural rules.

The commission voted to schedule the chair selection for the regular October 27 meeting and requested staff prepare any procedural amendments needed to align selection timing with the commission’s intent.

Staff said the October selection would permit more time for staff coordination and would give the commission a full meeting to confirm the chair; commissioners said they preferred to ensure a quorum and avoid a rushed special meeting.

No substantive policy or budget decisions were tied to the scheduling vote; the action is procedural and advisory to Council.
