West Green Elementary principal reports new building, reading gains ahead of December move

Amy Bynum, principal of West Green Elementary School, told the Coffee County Board of Education at its July 24 work session that construction on a new school building is well underway and the school plans a tentative move in December.
Bynum said summer work included interior updates at the existing site—painting, floor changes and updated bathrooms—and that staff and volunteers have been preparing parking and other logistics so teachers have places to park when school resumes. “It’s amazing what they’ve accomplished this summer,” she said.
The principal summarized student-achievement indicators and programs she said contributed to recent gains. Based on spring STAR reading and math testing, Bynum reported that 61.7% of students showed typical or high reading growth from fall to spring and 60.1% showed similar growth in math. She said fifth-grade reading-on-grade-level rates rose by 34% year over year. Bynum said the school had been recognized by the state superintendent for “exceptional growth in literacy” and cited classroom strategies such as goal setting, recognition posters and nine-week assemblies.
Bynum described staffing and program changes for the coming year: two pre-K teachers, three teachers in most grades, four first-grade teachers, two ESOL teachers (up from 1.5), and an additional inclusion teacher. She also said student-teacher pipelines are producing certified teachers for the district and that West Green will host South Georgia College’s parent-teacher program.
The principal highlighted family- engagement activities and community partnerships, including a “Fiesta night,” a vendor event, a veterans’ wall and an annual bicycle giveaway sponsored by a local church. She said those events and programs aim to strengthen school climate and give students exposure to career awareness through guest speakers and senior-walk events.
Bynum closed with a short message about teamwork and vision as the school prepares to relocate: “We will build boldly, we’ll teach with purpose, and we’ll light the way forward together.”
The updates were delivered during the board’s work session; the board did not take a formal vote on the school move at that meeting.
