Desert Vista student says district blocked memorial tribute for teammate; board asks staff to follow up

A Desert Vista student, McKenna Philpott, accompanied by her mother Angela Philpott, used the public-comment period to raise concerns about her school's handling of memorials for a teammate who died.

McKenna said she and teammates were refused the chance to wear or otherwise memorialize the player's football jersey number when flag football jerseys were distributed. She said the school told her the number was "retired to" the coach, while other schools had been allowed to memorialize teammates. McKenna called the decision discriminatory and said it stigmatized suicide.

Her mother read a eulogy McKenna had written and asked the board to allow remembrance. The student said she had filed a complaint with the school and had difficulty contacting the principal and athletic director; she said the team had been given a "hard no."

President Montero asked Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Wilson to follow up. The board did not act; public-comment rules limit board response to directing staff to review or placing the matter on a future agenda.
