During a work-session segment of the Aug. 11 Jackson County Commission meeting, county staff and commissioners discussed resurfacing, a change from a chip-seal approach to hot-mix asphalt in some sections, and the allocation of an additional $200,000 in bond proceeds for road work.
Staff told commissioners that the earlier striping plan had been modified to hot-mix paving on some roads and that a recent bid and materials costs had changed expectations. The county has an additional $200,000 available from bond proceeds that could fund roughly two miles of additional paving, staff said.
Commissioners discussed how to divide the two miles among the four commission districts. After consideration of prior allocations (which had been proportional to road-mile counts), the commission agreed in the meeting to split the two miles as half-mile increments for each district in this round, with two districts receiving 1.25 miles during the planned sequence and the other two receiving half-mile segments as the board works through the schedule.
Commissioners also agreed to a follow-up working session to review road-condition data and funding sources; staff proposed Aug. 27 after the commission's budget meeting to finalize road selections and allocation details.
The direction locks a per-district, near-term allocation approach for the additional $200,000 and tasks staff with preparing the road lists, condition data and scheduling for the follow-up meeting.
