Jackson County Commission adopts 2026 county transportation plan required by state law

The Jackson County Commission on Aug. 11 approved the county's 2026 transportation plan, a required submission that outlines where county road and transportation funds will be spent and that supports transparency reporting tied to state law.

Mister Kendall, the engineering representative who presented the plan to the commission, described it as a mandatory requirement tied to recent transparency legislation and said the document will be followed by design phases and staged construction. "This is a mandatory requirement from the 2019 recall that, act of that. It's part of our transparency commitment with that law that we post the transportation plan," Kendall said.

Commissioners pressed staff for timing clarity. One commissioner noted that residents sometimes assume a road listed in the plan will be paved immediately; staff reiterated that the plan reflects multi-stage work—preliminary design, then phased construction—and that exact start dates depend on funding, easements, design and contractor scheduling.

After discussion, a motion to approve the 2026 county transportation plan carried on a voice vote. County staff said the plan will be posted publicly with follow-up expenditure reports as required by the state filing and that road selection and sequencing would be coordinated with commissioners and public works staff.

The approval authorizes county staff to proceed with the preliminary design and scheduling steps described in the plan; specific construction start dates will be set when contracts and funding are finalized.
