Cumberland County recognizes retiring public health and sheriff's office employees

The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 2 presented plaques recognizing long-serving county employees, including Cheryl McLaurin of the Cumberland County Public Health Department and a retiring member of the sheriff's office listed in the meeting as Mark E. Devont.
Commissioners said Cheryl McLaurin served the county from June 1, 1995, to Feb. 28, 2025, and thanked her for her years of service. A commissioner presented McLaurin with a plaque and other commissioners offered remarks thanking her for her work with public health.
Later in the meeting, the board recognized a retirement from the sheriff's office. The meeting record lists the sheriff's office retiree as Mark E. Devont, with service dates given as Sept. 30, 1999, through May 31, 2025. Commissioners thanked him for his years in law enforcement and asked attendees to join in thanking him as he accepted a plaque.
Remarks at the meeting emphasized appreciation for public service in both public health and law enforcement, and commissioners briefly paused for handshakes and in-chamber recognition following each presentation. No formal personnel actions, appointments or policy changes were recorded as part of these recognitions; both items were ceremonial.
The meeting proceeded afterward to agenda adjustments, consent items and a closed session for attorney-client matters. The board said there was no action taken as a result of that closed session and that a lease matter would return to the board at a future session for action.
