City Council on Aug. 25 approved an ordinance increasing the Shaker Heights Police Department’s 2025 appropriations for training from $100,000 to $160,000, transferring $60,000 from the local law enforcement trust fund (Fund 701).
Commander Kohanski told council a recent account review showed the department had exhausted its original appropriation and requested the increase so officers could continue required and advanced training. Kohanski said the department sent officers to the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives conference in Florida and a community engagement forum in Chicago among other advanced training opportunities.
The item had been reviewed by the Safety & Public Works and Finance committees and received unanimous committee support. Council approved the appropriation increase under suspension on first reading by roll call. The motion was moved by Mr. Claytor and seconded by Ms. Carmela Williams; the roll call showed unanimous aye votes.
Council recorded no stipulations about additional reporting; the ordinance was presented as an emergency so training could continue without interruption.
