SKEA President Tyler Skyler Lakeburg said the union expects a quieter bargaining year ahead: “I’m sure the district agrees that since the last three school years we have been engulfed in bargaining, we will have this next year without it,” he said.
Superintendent Castaneda told the board the district and union reached the agreement after an “expeditious, efficient, thoughtful” bargaining process completed June 20. Castaneda said release of federal fiscal‑year 2025 funding preserved district reserves and allowed the district to avoid tapping reserves to continue critical programming.
Board discussion highlighted recurring concerns about the state funding model and the long‑term sustainability of competitive teacher pay. Director Dr. Satya Shandragiri thanked teachers and urged a broader review of school funding, saying the district should pursue a “progressive educational public education funding model” and consider an updated costing study to determine appropriate staffing and classroom sizes.
The motion to ratify the agreement was moved by Director Satti and seconded by Director Mail. The board vote was unanimous.
The ratification preserves negotiated terms for the covered period and, according to district remarks, reduces the immediate need to draw on district reserves because federal FY25 funds were released. District staff did not announce a contract signing at the meeting; board clerks will complete required paperwork after the vote.
