Members of the Waukesha City Building and Grounds Committee canceled their scheduled meeting after concluding they did not have a quorum, and moved outstanding agenda items to the committee’s next regularly scheduled meeting on Oct. 6.
The meeting stalled after committee participants confirmed several expected members had not arrived. "As of now, we don't have a quorum, so [the] meeting might be canceled," said Craig, a City Engineering staff member. Later in the conversation a committee member said, "Unfortunately, we're gonna call the meeting tonight because we don't have enough people to hold the meeting. And everything will be brought up at our next meeting."
The canceled session included discussion among those present about staffing and recruitment in the city engineering office. Craig said the engineering field is "very competitive right now" and described recent hiring challenges, including candidates declining offers for pay reasons and the likely loss of a highly rated intern who has drawn outside interest. He described recent interview activity and expressed concern that the department’s staffing level has been reduced compared with prior years.
Committee members spoke about options for rescheduling and how notification of any special meeting would occur. Committee members asked how they would be notified if a special meeting were called; one member said attendees would be notified and that participants who had provided contact information would receive alerts. The group confirmed the next regular meeting date as Oct. 6 unless a special meeting is scheduled in the interim.
Other items mentioned in passing included expected referrals from Richardson, described as related to signage, and several local staffing names and agencies discussed as potential hires for engineering or project management roles.
Because no quorum was reached, the committee took no formal votes and did not advance agenda items. Members present agreed affected items would be taken up at the next meeting.
For the record, participants suggested checking the committee webpage or provided contact information to receive notice of any special meeting before Oct. 6.
