Trustees review road and trail projects, bridge updates and raise e-bike safety concerns

GROSSE ILE, Mich. — During reports and discussion on July 28, Grosse Ile trustees summarized upcoming public-works projects, a planned bridge commission schedule and expressed concern about e-bike safety on shared pathways.
Public-works schedule: Trustees and the Department of Public Service said concrete repairs would begin soon at specified neighborhoods (including Manchester and Cadillac Circle) and that Elba Drive’s special-assessment public hearing had been set. The township said work would generally be managed to maintain single-lane traffic where possible and that affected residents would receive advance notice.
Trail and paving work: The Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee will hold a special meeting to review RFPs: one for a one-and-a-half-inch cap paving project on the south trail system and another for a comprehensive trail-audit by engineers to assess maintenance needs and intervals. The recreation commission did not meet in July.
Meridian and county roadwork: Trustees said the county plans to repave Meridian and may complete work this year pending scheduling; the county had delayed work earlier because of bridge load restrictions. The board said it prioritized township millage funds for neighborhood roads the county would not cover.
Bridge commission and webcams: The township reported the bridge commission’s first meeting is scheduled for Aug. 20; trustees also said the township has obtained bids for four webcams for live roadway/bridge views to allow residents to check bridge conditions online.
E-bike safety: Several trustees and residents urged action on increasingly frequent near-misses involving e-bikes on shared paths and neighborhood streets. Trustees said Michigan code treats many e-bikes as non-motorized for path access and that some e-bikes (Class 3) can reach high speeds. Trustees asked the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and staff to research possible local regulations or signage and to return recommendations to the board.
Public comment: Residents reported individual complaints — including a water-leak billing issue raised by Pyeong Chung — and multiple residents urged a process for handling master-plan concerns. Deborah Stevens and other commenters asked the board to provide public input opportunities on recommended plan changes.
Next steps: Staff will post notices to residents ahead of roadwork, move forward with the trail RFP schedule, convene the bridge commission on Aug. 20 and coordinate BPAC work on e-bike policy options for a future meeting.
