Watertown city manager Alan Steger introduces priorities and stresses city–county cooperation

Alan Steger, the newly appointed city manager for Watertown, introduced himself to the Codington County Commission at the Aug. 19 meeting and urged continuing cooperation between the city and county.
"I'm a long time resident to the community. I've been here 20 some years," Steger said, and he told commissioners he wants the county to know the city manager's office is available for collaboration. Steger listed the city’s near-term priorities as finishing the city budget, a street maintenance facility, improving fire service on the city's east side and housing initiatives.
Commissioners and staff described recent county–city coordination they said has smoothed projects, including help from the city waiving permit fees related to the recent jail project. Commissioner comments at the meeting noted the county and city have worked closely on economic development, pictometry (aerial imagery) and road work near Highway 212.
Steger said he preferred to introduce himself before facing critical negotiations or crises between the city and county. Commissioners responded positively to the overview and expressed appreciation for the partnership.
