District forms Special Education Parent Advisory Council to broaden parent‑staff collaboration

District special-education leaders presented the newly formed Special Education Parent Advisory Council (PEAC) and described its membership, mission and near-term plans.
Becky (director of special education) and Lauren (presentation lead) said PEAC includes parents, building principals, intervention specialists and central-office staff representing the full continuum of special-education placements, including preschool and students placed outside the district. The council developed a mission and four subcommittees last year—communications, inclusive practices, policy and advocacy, and resource/support/training—and will create board roles (president, vice president, secretary and staff liaison) to lead subcommittee work.
Presenters said PEAC will offer four parent workshops this school year, distribute brochures in district buildings and align its plans with the district strategic plan. Board members and staff praised the council's careful planning and said the district would support outreach, including evaluating meeting times to reduce barriers such as child care.
The district emphasized PEAC's purpose is to provide ongoing collaboration, identify barriers facing families, educate and advocate for equitable access to services and create a community of shared experience to inform special-education program decisions.
