Board reviews first readings of two policy updates: virtual charter notification and student directory information

The Lake Oswego School District Board reviewed first readings of two policy updates recommended by the Oregon School Boards Association.

One revision aligns district policy with recent Oregon Administrative Rule changes about how parents notify districts when enrolling students in virtual public charter schools. Staff noted the district’s current share of students enrolled in virtual public charter schools is under 1 percent — well below the 3 percent threshold referenced in the policy — and said the update mainly cleans up language to reflect state rules.

A second first reading addressed student directory information and limited handling of Social Security numbers. A staff presenter described minor edits and a new footnote clarifying the provision of special education records to families within 10 business days, and said the district is already complying with that practice. On Social Security numbers, the policy will allow the district to request a parent’s SSN but clarified staff would not retain or copy those records as a routine matter.

Why it matters: The changes are procedural and administrative but can affect how families register students and how the district handles sensitive information. Staff said they will collect board comments and return the policies in a future consent agenda if no substantive edits are requested.
