Staff summary and OSPI alignment Gail (staff member) told the board that the district’s nondiscrimination policy had been revised in consultation with legal counsel and other staff to align with the Washington Association of School District Administrators (WASDA) model and OSPI guidance, following changes prompted by a prior OCR complaint. "Page 3. This is something that was worked through with Shawna and others, Katie Seidel, with regards to our, OCR complaint," she said, describing the effort to align policy language statewide.
Course adoption and instructional materials The board discussed policy 20‑20 (course design and adoption of instructional materials). Tracy and other members noted this policy will require first and second readings and formal adoption at a future meeting; staff said it will be placed on the next regular meeting agenda for that process.
Other policies reviewed The board reviewed or acknowledged a series of additional policies identified in the packet, including oath of office (11‑11), policy adoption manuals and administrative procedures (13‑10), ethical conduct for school directors (18‑15), transition to kindergarten (2230), and a model advertising policy (68‑15) offered by WASDA. Several of these were described by staff as carrying only minor or discretionary updates; others were marked as "critical" and will return for formal action.
Advertising policy (68‑15) Board members discussed whether to adopt WASDA’s model policy on advertising on district property. Staff described 68‑15 as adaptable and recommended legal review if the board wants to tailor it. The board agreed to move the model to first reading and to circulate it to stakeholders, including booster organizations and other groups that raise funds through banners or sponsorships.
Next steps Board members asked staff to route the course‑adoption item (20‑20) through the regular first/second reading process and to put several policies on the consent or regular agenda at the next meeting for formal consideration. The board did not take final votes on the policy items during the review session.
Ending Staff will present recommended final language and any associated procedures at the next meeting and will circulate the advertising policy draft to boosters and other stakeholders for feedback ahead of a planned first reading.
