Commissioners allocate $1.12 million for county facility repairs, including courthouse fire panel and Shaw Building HVAC

Randolph County commissioners on Sept. 8 approved a budget adjustment of $1,115,700 to address maintenance and repair projects at several county facilities.
County staff outlined five projects: replacement of the courthouse fire alarm panel (original to a 1990s addition and difficult to service); design and replacement of the Shaw Building HVAC (engineer estimated $40,000 for design and $500,000 for replacement); replacement of pumps and components at the solid waste facility pump station (estimate $69,300); additional work related to backup 911 relocation and suitability analysis at the Northgate facility (costs scaled for partial renovation); and replacement of terracotta sewer line behind Northgate (estimate $70,000). Staff added a 10% contingency to the combined total.
The funding was proposed to come from remaining contingency funds from the previously funded Agricultural Center project. Staff said contingency remains available after the Ag Center work and that some project bids may come in below engineer estimates.
A motion to approve the funding and the associated budget amendment passed by voice vote (ayes recorded; no roll-call tally recorded). Commissioners asked questions about the source of funds and whether remaining contingency would still cover the Ag Center; staff responded that contingency remained. The Shaw Building HVAC item accounts for the largest single share of the estimate.
No contractor awards were made at the meeting; staff said individual projects will proceed to procurement and bidding as appropriate.
