The Romulus City Council on Sept. 8 voted to concur with city administration and adopt a resolution recommending that Trackside Hideaway LLC, operated by James and Maria Bullock at 36724 Goddard Road in Romulus, be considered for a new Class C liquor license by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
James Bullock, speaking for the applicants, said the venue is “currently running as a event space” and the owners want to “change from an event space to bar.” He said the business will host live music and show larger sporting events.
The council’s action is a local recommendation only; final approval is issued by the Michigan Liquor Control Commission. The motion directed the city to forward the application “pursuant to MCL 436.1501” and other materials noted in the administrative packet.
Council members asked about operating hours, parking and competition with nearby venues. Councilmember Roscoe asked whether the venue would be open daily or primarily rented for events; Bullock said the intent is to operate regular bar hours: about 4 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Thursday, and from about noon to 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Roscoe also noted the proximity of two other venues in the same downtown strip and expressed concern about added competition.
Bullock told council the building provides 17 on-site parking spaces and that the applicant is counting on public on-street parking and nearby public lots to serve customers. The council did not place conditions on the recommendation related to parking or operating hours; the city’s building department has reviewed capacity and parking for code compliance.
After the discussion the council voted by roll call to approve the resolution recommending local approval. Recorded yes votes included Councilmember John Wadsworth, Councilmember Kraut, Councilmember Roscoe, Councilmember Talley, Councilmember Abdo, Councilmember Jones and the chair. The council’s recommendation will be forwarded to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission for final action.
The council packet noted administrative review and stated the application had been routed through city departments and met local requirements to be submitted to the state agency.
