Commission approves repair to county employee’s truck after storm‑related damage at county facility

Taylor County received a claim from an employee who reported personal vehicle damage after metal debris shifted in the access road at the county roll‑off/compactor site during heavy rain and wind. The employee described placing debris out of the travel lane during a storm and discovering later that his truck had been dented and damaged.

County staff and the employee documented the incident, photographed the damage and discussed the claim with the county’s adjuster. Staff said the adjuster initially indicated a requirement for video evidence to approve the claim, and the employee said video was not available. County staff said the insurer ultimately treated the incident as an ‘‘act of God’’ and reported denial under the employee’s circumstances; staff escalated the case to a senior adjuster and obtained a different response.

After review and discussion on the record — including recognition of the employee’s long service and the circumstances documented by staff — a commissioner moved to pay for repairs to the employee’s truck. The transcript records the motion and a follow‑up statement from the chair thanking the employee; staff later agreed to follow up with the employee to arrange payment and repair logistics.

Staff noted county policy generally does not cover personal vehicle damage that occurs while on county property or during personal use, and that exceptions can be considered by the board on a case‑by‑case basis.
