Airport advisory committee reports fatal aircraft accident, AWOS construction timeline and fuel activity

The Hot Springs Airport Advisory Committee reported an aircraft accident near the municipal airport on July 12 that resulted in one fatality and one injury and is under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Airport Manager Ivan Venner told the committee emergency responders coordinated on scene. The Department of Transportation inspection on Aug. 5 was reported to have gone well, Venner said.
Committee members discussed the All-Weather Observing System (AWOS) project: a pre-construction meeting is set for Sept. 15, 2025, and the airport will be closed Sept. 16–18, 2025 for related work. The committee recorded a scheduled completion date of April 30, 2026. Venner also reported fuel-sales and operations data: 1,885.88 gallons of fuel were sold in July 2025 compared with 1,879 gallons in July 2024; fuel price remained $5.99 per gallon; and inventory was 5,998 gallons as of Aug. 7, 2025. The committee recorded 79 fuel transactions and 122 flight operations over the preceding five weeks.
The Fall River Balloon Festival and other airport events were discussed; committee members asked for volunteer support and noted event scheduling. The committee also noted Southern Hills Aviation has signed a building lease and that some seed operations (single-engine air tankers) had temporarily relocated due to changing fire activity.
No formal council action on airport items was recorded in the meeting minutes; the report was informational and the advisory committee will monitor AWOS construction and operational impacts.
