Parents and residents urge Downingtown Area SD board to settle teacher contract as school year begins

Several community members addressed the board during public comment to urge a swift, fair settlement with district teachers as the new school year begins.

Jen Meyer, who identified herself as a resident, former Downingtown teacher and active community mentor, spoke on behalf of teachers in the room and watching remotely. "Your teachers and staff show up in every single day to educate, to guide, to mentor, and to protect this district and the children in this district. Now it's time for all of you to protect them. Not with your words or your hashtags, your actions," Meyer said.

Adam Udell, a West Bradford resident and parent, thanked board members for their service and described his children's positive experiences in the district. He urged trustees "to get to the table, provide them a fair solid contract with compensation in line with other districts in Chester County and benefits to match."

A resident who identified himself as Andy from Euclid described a personal example of a teacher calming his daughter's fears on the first day of school and credited district teachers with inspiring long-term academic success. "They're not teachers to her. They're heroes, and they're her role models," he said.

Board members did not take public comment as formal action; speakers explicitly asked the board to negotiate in good faith and prioritize teacher well-being.
