Wylie council accepts proposed property tax rates, schedules Aug. 26 public hearing

Wylie — The Wylie City Council on Aug. 12 voted 6-0 to accept the proposed property tax-rate calculations required by Texas law and set a public hearing for Aug. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Wylie Municipal Complex to consider final approval of the tax rate and the fiscal year 2025-26 budget.

City staff told the council the statutorily required calculations show a “no new revenue” rate of 0.521441 per $100 of valuation and a voter-approval rate of 0.543438 per $100. Council staff said the proposed budget is based on the voter-approval tax rate and that the proposed budget had been filed with the city secretary and posted on the city website for public review.

Miss Brown, a City of Wylie staff member, told the council that "the no new revenue tax rate is 0.521441 per $100 valuation and the voter approval tax rate is 0.543438," and that the city must publish the rates and set a hearing under state law.

Mayor Pro Tem Gino Malice, who moved the resolution, said the increase was modest compared with last year and thanked staff for efforts to limit increases: "Last year's tax rate was 0.534, and this year's is ... 0.543. So it's about a penny increase over what last year's tax rate was. ... I'm happy to make a motion there." Councilman Dave Strang seconded the motion. The motion passed 6-0. Councilman Scott Williams was absent.

Why it matters: accepting the calculated rates is a required step in Texas' truth-in-taxation process. The Aug. 26 hearing will be the public forum where residents may speak before the council takes the final vote on the tax rate and budget.

What comes next: The council set Aug. 26, 2025, at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at the Wylie Municipal Complex as the date, time and place for the public hearing and final vote. Staff will publish the required notices in the city's official newspaper and post required materials on the city's website as required by the Texas Property Tax Code and local government code.
