Jeremy Phillips, Tamworth Recreation Director, gave a department update at the Select Board meeting on Aug. 7, reporting robust summer programming participation and outlining several near‑term initiatives.
Phillips said the town’s Tamworth Summer Enrichment program held one week and plans another week, with participation by local organizations including the public library, school (for gym and bathrooms), fire/rescue, police, Bear Camp Bikes and other local groups. He reported White Lake swim lessons recorded 273 participant sessions and Bear Camp Pond swim lessons counted an estimated 432 participants across six weeks. Year‑to‑date the recreation program has served 3,302 people, Phillips said, excluding special events such as Fourth of July and Easter activities.
Phillips recalled a well‑attended Fourth of July parade and related events and described adult programs — a Squam boat cruise, an upcoming adult swim session at Chikawaw Lake and ongoing pickleball play. He said demand for additional pickleball times appears strong, with requests from beginners and advanced players; Phillips plans a first tournament on Sept. 13 and discussed coordinating inter‑town play with neighboring Sandwich.
Phillips said he is working with the Tamworth Outing Club and the conservation commission to rough‑in a half‑mile trail around the recreation field on the Brick property; a work day is tentatively planned for mid‑September. He also described open‑gym style preschool activity on the field and a continuing slate of Friday trips that have hosted about 142 kids year to date.
The board asked for questions and praised the programming. Phillips invited residents to check the town website for adult swim lesson signups and said more detail on pickleball scheduling and the trail work day will be posted as plans finalize.
